About Me

Valerie and her family

I've always loved teaching and I knew that was the path I wanted to take in life. I received my undergraduate degrees from Oregon State University (Go Beavers!) and earned my Masters degree from Western Oregon University. I taught in elementary classrooms for almost ten years before transitioning to become a reading specialist. Though I have taught various grades, third graders will always have my heart.

My husband, daughter, and I live in a small town called Turner, outside of Salem, OR. We also have a fluffy black cat named Sid. Our family keeps busy spending time with friends and family, working on house projects, and exploring around our area. I enjoy reading, listening to podcasts, baking, and going on walks.

My Why

Teaching reading is my true passion! During my time as a classroom teacher, I found the most joy in literacy instruction, especially during reading intervention sessions. It was during these moments that I could offer personalized guidance to students, witnessing rapid growth in their reading skills.

I soon realized that there was much more to learn about effective reading instruction, so I decided to pursue my EBLI certification. I was determined to combine my love for working one-on-one with students and my dedication to helping them become proficient readers.

My heart has always been with struggling readers, and I truly enjoy helping them unlock the mysteries of the English language. This is why I chose to become a reading specialist, so I can help students become confident and successful in their reading, writing, and spelling skills!
